Beautiful island for bird enthusiasts. A little paradise lost at sea. It takes some effort to get there but so unforgettable!
On Handa Island you will have the possibility to easily see lumma, Alka, északi sirályhojsza, Lunda, Nagy halfarkas and the Ékfarkú halfarkas which nest on the island and many other birds! It is an island where no one lives and it is staying wild. There are pedestrian paths to follow and which allow you to take a nice tour. You have breathtaking views of a live seabird colonies. The best time is April to July for the reproduction of seabirds. Mid-May to July for Lunda. Watch out for the Nagy halfarkas attacks!
You can only reach the island in a small inflatable boat. You must first go to the small port of Tarbet, there is a small car park to park the car. There is also a cafe / restaurant on this parking site and toilets. Take food with you, because on Handa Island, there is only a picnic place. The walking route on the island that is shown on the map below is about 6 km long.
One-way crossings from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. - Last return from the island at 5:00 p.m. Adult £ 20, child £ 5, child under 5 free. Handa Island is a short ferry ride from the Tarbet exit 3 miles north of Scourie on the A 894, the beautiful west coast road from Ullapool to Durness (then the junction 3 miles from the pier). There are toilets but no place to eat, only take a picnic and leave with very, very little shelter. So bring clothes adapted to the weather. Donate a little money to support the association that manages this unique site! Thank you.
