Description

Abernethy Forest is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. About half the forested area is unique and unspoilt, being mainly scots pine with an understory of juniper, heather, rush, bracken and silver birch.

At the centre is Loch Garten and the RSPB nature centre providing views of nesting Halászsas (they don't always breed here). Héja, Siketfajd, Szirti sas and Búbos cinege are regular here. There are several Nyírfajd leks, which may be seen early morning, before 7am, in April and early May. Take care not to disturb the birds. Vízirigó, hegyi billegető, Kékes rétihéja, Keresztcsoru, Csíz and Erdei pityer also breed.

Mammals include roe and red deer, pine marten, otter, wildcat (very elusive) and red squirrel.

Access

From Aviemore take the B970 eastwards and fork northwards at Coylumbridge. From Grantown on Spey take A95 then B970 southwards. The two main access points to this large Reserve are Loch Garten and the village of Nethy Bridge. Loch Garten is two and a half miles from the village of Boat of Garten and four miles from Nethy Bridge, and is linked to both villages by minor roads and the Speyside Way. Bus service 34 runs from Aviemore to both villages. In summer the Strathspey Steam Railway stops at Boat of Garten and Broomhill, one mile north of Nethy Bridge.
