It is a breeding place for Szürke gém that can be observed from the path, and a habitat for waterfowl and for birds living in extensively used meadows. It is also a spawning ground for numerous amphibian species. Bird species that can be observed here include Szürke gém, Foltos nádiposzáta, Mezei veréb, Kerti rozsdafarkú , Szárcsa, Tőkés réce, Molnárfecske, Füsti fecske, Sarlósfecske, Karvaly, vörös vércse, Egerészölyv, Csíz, Nagy fakopáncs, Kék cinege, őszapó, széncinege, Vörösbegy, Erdei pinty, fekete rigó, Seregély, Kormos varjú, Mandarinréce, Nagy bukó, Balkáni gerle, Örvös galamb, and Fehér gólya.

Access
There is a public car park next to the lake. However, travelling by bus number 912 from Zürich Bellevue or bus number 919 from the Küsnacht train station (both to the bus station Itschnach-Tägermoos) is recommended. You can also reach Schübelweiher on different walkways leading there from Küsnacht train station in ca. 40 minutes.

From February, Szürke gém breed on an island. This allows fascinating observations of the feeding and the progress of the young birds from the walking path. Occasionally a Fehér gólya may be looking for a bite in one of the meadows next to the lake.
