The Häftli is an important wintering site for waterfowl, including several hundred Csörgo réce, Kendermagos réce and Fütyülő réce. Various species of herons, birds of prey, waders and numerous songbirds can be observed as they pass through.
Although the area was significantly changed by the two Jura water corrections and in particular by the construction of the Nidau–Büren Canal, the characteristic floodplain elements are still largely present today.
