Description
Stegeborg lies in the middle of the long bay of Slätbaken. In and around Stegeborg ca 180 bird species have been recorded. The strait at Stegeborg is ice-free almost all winters, if the temperture is not too cold the deeper parts around Stegeborg are also open. Large amounts of Kontyos réce, Kerceréce, Nagy bukó, Tőkés réce and Szárcsa winter in the aera. Numbering in the hundreds sometimes in the thousands. Along with these smaller amounts of less common wintering birds like Kis bukó, Hegyi réce, Kendermagos réce, Csörgo réce, Búbos vöcsök, Barátréce, Kárókatona, Szürke gém, Énekes hattyú, Nyári lúd and Kanadai lúd. The area is home to wintering gulls. Many Rétisas also winter here. As do passerine birds like Nagy őrgébics, Léprigó, fenyőrigó, and Vörösbegy.
During spring migration many dabbling ducks (Csörgo réce, Fütyülő réce, Kendermagos réce, and Nyílfarkú réce), swans and geese can be found. Most common among geese are Nyári lúd and Kanadai lúd. Often in the hundreds. Often a few Nagy lilik, Vetési lúd, and Tundrai vetési lúd. Hundreds of Énekes hattyú use the fields during migraton. Hundreds of Kontyos réce and Kerceréce can also be found. Pehelyréce can also be observed during migration. Quite a few birds of prey can be seen. Some of the more common are Barna rétihéja, Egerészölyv, Halászsas and Héja. Sometimes Házi rozsdafarkú can be found. Füles vöcsök and Sarki búvár often stay on the waters.
Tövisszúró gébics, Karmazsinpirók, Erdei pacsirta, Szürke légykapó, Kormos légykapó and Mezei pacsirta all breed on the fields and forests. In the reedbeds Foltos nádiposzáta, Nádi sármány, and cserregő nádiposzáta breed. While Nádirigó and Énekes nádiposzáta are sometimes heard. Apácalúd, Kárókatona, Búbos vöcsök and Kendermagos réce breed. heringsirály and Darázsölyv can sometimes be seen. During autumn large flocks of diving ducks, and some passerine birds can often be found.
