Description
At Sandarviken 223 bird species have been recorded. 35 species of wading birds have been recorded.
Sandarviken holds thousands of wintering Hegyi réce but Füstös réce, Fekete réce, Pehelyréce and diving ducks also winter in smaller numbers. Other waterfowl like Fütyülő réce, Kanalas réce Csörgo réce, Bütykös ásólúd and Kendermagos réce also winter in the area. Sandarviken holds wintering Búbos vöcsök, Vörösnyakú vöcsök, and Füles vöcsök.Apácalúd also winter as do a few wading birds in winter. Kis sárszalonka is sometimes found. Wintering birds of prey are often found in the area. Some of the common ones are Kékes rétihéja, Egerészölyv, Rétisas, and Szirti sas.
During migration period the bay often holds large amounts of waders. Most numerous is the Havasi partfutó which sometimes number in the thousands. Nagy goda, Sárszalonka, Csigaforgató, Nagy póling, Piroslábú cankó, Havasi partfutó, Gulipán, and Parti lile all breed somewhat regularly. Other wading birds often found are:kőforgató, Ezüstlile, Kis goda, Fenyérfutó, Temminck-partfutó, and Apró partfutó. Rarer wading birds like Sárjáró, vékonycsőrű víztaposó, Kis sárszalonka and Nagy sárszalonka are sometimes found. Many vagrant wading birds have also been found.
In the lagoon Kendermagos réce, Kanalas réce, Böjti réce and many other dabbling ducks often Feed. Északi búvár and Sarki búvár often rest at Sandarviken year round. Large amounts of geese use the coastal meadows as resting and feeding ground during their migration. Apácalúd and Nyári lúd can sometimes be found in the thousands. rövidcsőrű lúd and Vörösnyakú lúd has been seen.
