Slano Kopovo is a reserve in northern part of Serbia. Throughout the year it is mostly dry, but in late autumn conditions get better and lots of birds gather.
Slano Kopovo is dry from March to November. But from late fall onwards throughout the winter and early spring the reserve is full of water and thousands of Daru, geese and many others birds gather here. Birds like Daru, Nagy lilik, Vörösnyakú lúd and Nyári lúd are regular visitors to this place. There have been some records of some more rare species of geese like Kis lilik, Örvös lúd and Tundrai vetési lúd. Also, there are smaller northern visitors to be seen here, like Hósármány, fenyőrigó, Nagy őrgébics and some bigger ones like Énekes hattyú and Kis hattyú. Also during winter some ducks can be seen like Tőkés réce, Csörgo réce, Kendermagos réce and Nyílfarkú réce.
For Slano Kopovo you need a car. Nearest city is Novi Bečej, and from there Slano Kopovo is about 7 kilometers away. The lake can be accessed from north and from south. From both sides best is to park near the main road and continue on foot. In autumn and winter, boots are recommended. Driving around the lake on dirt tracks is prohibited.
It is possible to walk around the lake using circular path. If coming in morning, the best direction is clockwise, so that the sun is in the back most of the time. There are 3 bird hides/towers on the lake. Two are on the western side and one on the eastern side. The first one is 300m south of the visitor center, covering the waterbirds. The second one on the south-west shore, covering the shorebirds. The third one is actually behind the second smaller lake further on th east and is covering reed and grassland species.
Visits must be announced to the reserve management.
