Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Sárgalábú sirály, heringsirály and Dankasirály. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Kis póling, kőforgató, Fenyérfutó and billegetőcankó.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Küszvágó csér and Rózsás csér, but sometimes also Kenti csér.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Mediterrán vészmadár can be observed. Small numbers of szalagos szerecsenhojsza can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like atlanti vészmadár and kis vészmadár.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like gyűrűscsőrű sirály, Sarki sirály and, in 2011, a sárgakoronás bakcsó.
