Description
"Zandput Culemborg" is an old sand extraction area, consisting of a small lake and is surrounded by a poplar and willow forest. Adjacent to the forest, large pastures draw the landscape. The lake itself isn't a hotspot for waterbirds. Species like Búbos vöcsök and Kontyos réce can be seen. The shoreline and its overhanging branches are a great spot for Jégmadár. The area provides also an important habitat for the Western Clubtail (dragonfly).
The forest is a great spot for observing Sárgarigó in Spring; a scarce species in the area. Several individuals tend to hang around during the breeding season. Other songbird species that can be heard and seen regularly are Szürke légykapó, kormosfejű cinege, Csuszka and Kerti poszáta. Scarcer species that can be seen here are Kis fakopáncs and Berki poszáta. The larger bushes adjacent to the forest and pastures are great for Kerti geze and Énekes nádiposzáta.
The pastures provide a good foraging area for Fehér gólya. They can also be seen resting on the street lights above the highway from here. Another good species in these pastures is Fogoly.
