Description

Waterdunen is a new landscaped nature reserve to compensate for loss of coast and river biotope in the Western Scheldt. The nature of Waterdunen is special because it is connected to the Western Scheldt. A special tidal culvert in the dyke at Nieuwesluis ensures that the salty Western Scheldt water flows in and out of the area. Due to the constant change between high and low water, the landscape of salt marshes, creeks, sand and mud flats looks different every hour.

The nature reserve is open to the public and you can take a circular walk past bird hides and viewing screens. The area has an ever-changing mix of resident birds and migrants and is located on the transition from land and sea. Waterdunen is most attractive for bird watching in spring and autumn. You can encounter birds like Gulipán, Nagy póling, Kis póling, Csigaforgató, kőforgató, Aranylile, Parti lile, Havasi partfutó, Piroslábú cankó, Kanalasgém, Bütykös ásólúd en Apácalúd. Also good chance on terns like Kenti csér, Kis csér and Küszvágó csér. The birds are easy to spot from both high and low viewing locations.

Nederlands: Waterdunen is een nieuw getijdenatuurgebied van 200 hectare aan de monding van de Westerschelde in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Het is aangelegd ter compensatie van het verlies aan kust- en riviernatuur in de Westerschelde. De natuur van Waterdunen is bijzonder omdat deze in verbinding staat met de Westerschelde. Een speciale getijdenduiker in de dijk bij Nieuwesluis zorgt ervoor dat het zoute Westerscheldewater het gebied in- en uitstroomt. Door de constante wisseling tussen hoog en laag water, ziet het landschap van schorren, kreken, zand- en slikplaten er ieder uur anders uit.

Het natuurgebied is zodanig aangelegd dat het heel toegankelijk is en aantrekkelijk om er vogels te kijken. Je kunt een rondwandeling maken langs vogelhutten en kijkschermen. Het gebied heeft jaarrond een steeds wisselende mix van standvogels en trekvogels en ligt op de overgang van land en zee en op de route van veel trekvogels. Waterdunen is in het voor- en najaar tijdens de vogeltrek het meest aantrekkelijk om vogels te kijken. Veel steltlopers en andere water- en moerasvogels kun je in het gebied zien. Zoals Gulipán, Nagy póling, Kis póling, Csigaforgató, kőforgató, Aranylile, Parti lile, Havasi partfutó, Piroslábú cankó, Kanalasgém, Bütykös ásólúd en Apácalúd. Ook grote kans op sterns als Kenti csér, Kis csér en Küszvágó csér. De vogels zijn gemakkelijk te zien vanaf zowel hoge als lage kijkpunten.

Access

From the Netherlands, drive to Goes (A58) and take the Terneuzen exit (N62). Drive through the Westerschelde tunnel and drive in the direction of Breskens. From Belgium you drive to Bruges and take the Knokke-Heist exit and continue your route towards Sluis in the Netherlands. It is best to park in the Walendijk car park, € 2 per hour or € 7,50 day ticket (rates 2023). Click on the P in the map for directions to the parking. Bicycle: Waterdunen is a walking area, cycling is not allowed. You can park your bicycle in one of the many bicycle parkings at the entrances. Note: dogs are not allowed inside Waterdunen.

Nederlands: Fiets: Waterdunen ligt op ca. 10 minuten fietsen van het fiets- en voetgangersveer Vlissingen-Breskens. Je kunt je fiets parkeren bij een van de speciale Waterdunen fietsenstallingen bij de ingangen. Fietsen is in Waterdunen niet toegestaan. De fiets mag ook niet mee aan de hand, om hinder te voorkomen. Auto: Vanuit Nederland rijd je richting Goes (A58) en neem je de afslag Terneuzen (N62). Je rijdt door de Westerscheldetunnel en na de tunnel rijd je richting Breskens. Vlak voor Breskens neem je de afslag richting Groede en vervolgens naar parkeerplaats Walendijk. Vanuit België rijd je naar Brugge en neem je de afrit Knokke-Heist en vervolgt je de route richting Sluis in Nederland. Je kunt het best parkeren op de parkeerplaats Walendijk. Klik op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving. Parkeren kost € 2 per uur of € 7,50 voor een dagkaart (tarieven 2023). Let op: Honden zijn in het gebied niet toegestaan.

You can explore the area via various walking routes. The green 'Zeekraalroute' (4.5 km) is partly paved, partly unpaved and you walk a part over a boardwalk. The unpaved part of the trail can be muddy when it rains. Therefore, choose sturdy shoes. The orange bird route (5.5 km) leads over boardwalks and a paved path, past bird hides and screens. The blue golf route (9km) is a large round along the edges of the area. You get to see the whole area. For birders the orange bird route is the best choice.

Nederlands: Je kunt het gebied verkennen via verschillende wandelroutes. De groene Zeekraalroute (4,5 km) is deels verhard, deels onverhard en je wandelt een stuk over een vlonderpad. Het onverharde gedeelte van de wandelroute kan bij regen modderig zijn. Kies daarom voor stevige schoenen. De oranje vogelroute (5,5 km) voert over vlonderpaden en verhard pad, langs kijkhutten en kijkschermen en nog een klein stukje langs de zee. De blauwe golfroute (9 km) is een grote ronde langs de randen van gebied. Je krijgt zo het hele gebied te zien. Voor vogels kijken is de oranje vogelroute echter de beste keus.
