Description
The Boschplaat is located on the eastern tip of Terschelling. Here you will find a wide beach full of large groups of birds and the occasional seal, an extensive salt marsh area with many birds along the Wadden Sea and purple plains with sea lavender in summer. The largest natural forest of the Wadden Islands has also arisen here: the Berkenvallei (Birch Valley). The amount of birds you can see on the Boschplaat varies enormously. Sometimes the large salt marshes are teeming with birds, sometimes you see far fewer birds. But you always see something, the landscape is impressive and you can get information on the spot about what to see at the so-called 'Vogelwachterhuisje'. This cottage is almost permanently occupied by bird watchers who keep an eye on the area. These are volunteers who count the birds and often like to tell what has been seen that day.
About 65 bird species breed on the Boschplaat. Large gull colonies and 200 breeding pairs of Kanalasgém can be found on the salt marshes. Széki lile breed on the beach and various types of terns are found on the Koffieboonplaat, including the rare Kis csér. Hundreds of thousands of migratory birds use the area to rest during the long journey to their breeding or wintering grounds.

Nederlands: De Boschplaat ligt op de oostpunt van Terschelling. Het is de meest wilde en afgelegen plek van het eiland. Hier heeft de natuur vrij spel en ervaar je de weidsheid van de Waddenzee natuur. Je vindt hier aan de Noordzeekant een breed strand vol grote groepen vogels en af en toe een zeehond. Aan de Waddenzeekant vind je een uitgestrekt kweldergebied met ook veel vogels en in de zomer paarse vlaktes met lamsoor. Ook is aan westkant van de Boschplaat het grootste natuurlijke bos van de Waddeneilanden ontstaan: de Berkenvallei. De hoeveelheid vogels die je op de Boschplaat kunt zien wisselt enorm. Soms wemelt het op de grote kwelders van de vogels, soms zie je veel minder vogels. Maar je ziet altijd wat, het landschap is indrukwekkend en je kunt je ter plekke laten informeren over wat er te zien is bij het zogeheten 'Vogelwachtershuisje'. Dit wachthuisje is vrijwel permanent bezet door vogelaars die de omgeving in de gaten houden. Dit zijn vrijwilligers die de vogels tellen en vaak graag vertellen wat er die dag allemaal gezien is.
Zo'n 65 vogelsoorten broeden op de Boschplaat. Op de kwelders zijn grote meeuwenkolonies te vinden en 200 broedparen van de lepelaar. Op het strand broeden strandplevieren en op de Koffieboonplaat zitten verschillende soorten sterns, waaronder de zeldzame dwergstern. Honderdduizenden trekvogels gebruiken het gebied om uit te rusten tijdens de lange reis naar hun broed- of overwinteringsgebied.

Access
Getting to the Boschplaat will cost you a few drops of sweat. The best way to get there is by bicycle. You then cycle in the direction of Oosterend and there the Boschplaat is signposted on the way. You can park your bicycle at the entrance of the Boschplaat. It is about eight kilometers from this point to the eastern tip of the island. Please note: large parts of the Boschplaat (breeding sites for Ezüstsirály, heringsirály and Kanalasgém) are closed to the public from 15 March to 15 August. However, the sandy path along the dune row can be used all year round (this path is marked on the map). Bring plenty of water and wear good walking shoes as it is quite a hike if you want to walk all the way to the end of the trail. Please note that the parking lot indicated on the map is only accessible for bicycles, the area is not accessible for cars.

Nederlands: Bij de Boschplaat komen kost je wel wat zweetdruppels. De beste manier om er te komen is met de fiets. Je fiets dan richting Oosterend en daar staat onderweg de Boschplaat aangegeven. De fiets parkeer je bij de ingang van de Boschplaat. Het is vanaf dit punt ongeveer acht kilometer wandelen naar de oostpunt van het eiland. Let op: grote delen van de Boschplaat (broedlocaties van zilvermeeuw, kleine mantelmeeuw en lepelaar) zijn voor het publiek afgesloten van 15 maart tot 15 augustus. Wel kan het zandpad langs de duinenrij het hele jaar door worden gebruikt (dit pad staat aangegeven op de kaart). Neem voldoende water mee en trek goede wandelschoenen aan want het is een flinke tocht als je helemaal naar het einde van het pad wilt lopen. Let op: de parkeerplaats die is aangegeven op de kaart is alleen toegankelijk voor fietsen, het gebied is niet toegankelijk voor autos.
