With lush jungles and numerous rivers flowing through the region, Chitwan National Park and the surrounding areas have a high diversity of species and habitats for animals of all kinds. Tigers, Leopards, Sloth Bears, Indian Rhinos, Asian Elephants, Gharials and Ganges River Dolphins all flourish in the park’s expansive forests, hills and floodplains.

The area is fantastic for birdwatching. Approximately 70% of the park’s landscape is covered in dense Sal forest, with savannah grasslands making up much of the remainder. The region is home more than 600 species of birds. Colorful birds like woodpecker, hornbill, Bengal Florican and Red-headed Trogon. Winter birds such Northern Pintail and Bar-headed Goose are drawn by the sanctuary of the park’s rivers. In summers, the forest is alive with nesting migrants such as Indian Paradise-Flycatcher, Indian Pitta and parakeets. Winter birds include many migratory birds from Siberia. Other iconic birds to be found in Chitwan include Great Hornbill, Lesser Adjutant, Gray-crowned Prinia, Swamp Francolin and Slender-billed Babbler.

The best time for birdwatching is during the dry season from October to April. Guided hikes and off-road vehicle trips are possible.

Chitwan National Park is located 165 km west from Kathmandu. There are nine entrance gates to the park 1, Kasara via Jagatpur , 2. Ghatgain via Patihani , 3. Bhimle via Maghauli, 4. Khagendra mali via Bhandara , 5. Sunachuri via Sunachuri , 6. Sauraha via Tandi (Ratna Nagar)7. Laukhani via Pragatinaggr , 8. Amaltari via Danda , 9. Kujauli via Rajahar. An entry fee of NRs. 2000/- (Foreigners), NRs. 1000/- (SAARC), and NRs. 150/- (Nepalese) per person has to be paid at the Park's Entrance Gate (2024). The park headquarters is at Kasara (indicated by a star on the map).

Inside the park, there are 7 resorts run by park concessionaires that can provide lodging and access to wildlife activities. Various resorts and lodges situated outside the park also offer a variety of services.
