Passo del Turchino is a mountain pass at 591 m a.s.l., located on the Apennine watershed, connecting the maritime side with that of the Piedmontese Po Valley.
Passo del Turchino is a very good spot to watch bird migration, especially short-distance migrants. Most of the spring migration here takes place in March to April and autumn migration in October to November. In the autumn, hundreds birds can be seen especially early in the morning: Erdei pinty, fenyőpinty, Csíz, Meggyvágó, Énekes rigó, szőlőrigó. Also Daru can be seen both in February-March and in November. Some interesting species can be seen all year round, as Fekete harkály, Barátcinege, Csuszka and Búbos cinege.
The pass can be reached driving from Genova Voltri or from Masone, and there is a parking space very close to the site where the observations can be done (see map). At the site, there is a path along a stone wall, where observations can be made. On the other side of the stone wall, there is a ringing station and when the ringers are there it is possible to ask whether you can enter the property.
