Description
Grunnafjörður's fertile soil, together with other biological factors, makes the area an eminently suitable habitat for plants and animals. The fjord is the only Ramsar area in Iceland that borders the sea. The size of the area is approximately 1,470 hectares. The fjord is important for many species of birds. The area is internationally important for Örvös lúd, Sarki partfutó and Fenyérfutó. About 25% of the Örvös lúd population stops in Grunnafjörður on their journeys from mainland Europe to the Arctic in both spring and autumn and about 1% of the Sarki partfutó population. Many waterfowl, such as Tengeri partfutó, Havasi partfutó, Parti lile and Csigaforgató depend on the mudflats for their survival.
