Description
The Christou river is a fairly large wetland and saltmarsh area just west of Skala Kallonis. In general, the area is fairly wet, but this depends on the season and the amount of rainfall during winter. The creek near the ocean, though, always holds water. The wetland area is a great spot for waders, like Gólyatöcs, Széki lile and Szürke cankó. During the breeding season, the surrounding sandy areas are used as breeding grounds for Széki lile and Kis lile. Also, the higher parts of the area, mainly just southwest of the closest hotel (see map), is a great spot to observe Ugartyúk.
Around the wetland area, fields are just as foraging ground by harriers, like Barna rétihéja and Kékes rétihéja. Large flocks of pipits and wagtails can be seen here too. Near the beach, you can observe gulls and terns.
North of the road, you can find the inland part of the river and also some salt marshes. During migration, this part is great to observe waders, storks and egrets, like Temminck-partfutó and Fekete gólya. You might have the chance to see Jégmadár during winter here.
