Description
The Hohwald is a large forested area covering about 30 square kilometers. The open quarries in the forest offer good panoramic views of steep cliffs and surrounding forest. The area is good for observing bird species with different habitat requirements such as Uhu, Gatyáskuvik, Fekete harkály, hamvas küllő, Törpekuvik and Kis légykapó.

Access
The Hohwald forest is located northeast of the town of Neustadt. You can park at the edge of the forest or in designated hiking parking areas. Press P on the map for directions to a parking spot. From the parking continue on foot through the forest and to the quarries. Depending on your starting point, the walk will take approximately 20 minutes to an hour. A detour to Valtenberg with its observation tower is also worthwhile. The circular walk of 6 km shown on the map is just a suggestion, as there are many other (an shorter or longer) trails you can follow.
