The dam created for flood protection is one of the protected areas designated under the Ramsar Convention. The area is located in the Goldene Aue.
Helmestausee Berga-Kelbra is a beautiful area for waterfowl and, in the migration season, for Daru. Besides the water birds, birds can also be easily observed in the reed and meadow areas. Examples given here are: Nagy póling, Bíbic, Szárcsa, Búbos vöcsök, Feketenyakú vöcsök, Halászsas, Kárókatona, Énekes nádiposzáta and Függőcinege.
The Helmestausee Berga-Kelbra area is best explored from the three observation towers. To do so, drive via Kelbra to the eastern shore of the Stausee. You can park there at the first observation tower. This observation tower is on the Harzvorland Cycle Path. From the first tower, the path leads west and reaches the second observation tower near the campsite. There is a car park nearby. The third observation tower, located at the westernmost point, can be reached on foot or by bicycle. To do so, use the Harzvorlandradwanderweg (Harz foreland cycle path), which leads directly past it. Zoom in on the map and click on a P in the map for directions.
