Description
The Blankensee can be overlooked best from a boardwalk near the village of the same name. Close views of Barkóscinege and cserregő nádiposzáta, with luck also Függőcinege, are possible from the boardwalk (no scope needed). Bölömbika is often seen flying out of the reeds near the boardwalk, especially in winter. An occupied Halászsas nest can be seen from the boardwalk in summer.
Thousands of ducks and geese are on the lake in winter. Kis bukó, Nagy bukó and Kerceréce give good views. Others are Barátréce, Kontyos réce, Fütyülő réce and Kendermagos réce. Rétisas is regularly seen. The most common large gull is Sztyeppi sirály.
May is the month for kormos szerkő. With luck you can get fehérszárnyú szerkő and fattyúszerkő, too. Other good birds in spring are Feketenyakú vöcsök, Nyílfarkú réce and big flocks of swallows.
Walking through the village (Csicsörke, Fehér gólya), make sure to have a look for Jégmadár along the river Nieplitz.
On the walk to the tower in the north you pass the small lake Seechen (diminutive of lake "See"). Chances are good for Kerceréce, Kis vöcsök and Vörösnyakú vöcsök. From the tower you overlook the wetlands of the Ungeheuerwiesen. A breeding Halászsas, Bíbic, Sárszalonka and with luck Búbos banka can be seen. In winter Daru, Aranylile and northern geese are typical species. Nagy őrgébics is regurlarly seen in the open winter landscape.
