A lake that is rich in ducks, grebes and gulls and can be nicely overseen from a bird observation tower.
Portimojärvi is one of the best bird lakes and one of the most valuable wetlands in the area. The lake is actually a regulated extension of the Tengeliöjoki River. Many birds breed in the area and Portimojärvi is also a valuable as a gathering area for waterfowl during migration as in the summer closing season. Among the breeding birds are Fütyülő réce, Vörösnyakú vöcsök, Nagy bukó, Nyílfarkú réce, Kanalas réce, Sarki csér, Dankasirály, Kis sirály, Kontyos réce and Kis bukó. Other birds you can encounter are Énekes hattyú, Füles vöcsök, Kerceréce, Daru, billegetőcankó and Réti cankó. But many more, see the birdlist below. Best time for a visit is from half May until the start of autumn migration.
The bird tower is located north of Lake Portimojärvi, on the Aavasaksa-Raanujärvi road (932), about 8 km from Aavasaksa towards Raanujärvi. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
