Description
Luitemaa Nature Reserve is a wetland complex on the south-western coast of Estonia that consists of diverse coastal and inland habitats including shallow sea, capes and islands, coastal meadows and reed-beds. The coastal meadows near Võiste have shallow waters that attract large amounts of dabbling ducks (Kendermagos réce, Tőkés réce, Böjti réce, Fütyülő réce, Csörgo réce and so on), Bütykös ásólúd and swans. The wide coastal meadows and lagoons are favored by geese. Most common are Nyári lúd and Apácalúd. Rarer gooses like Nagy lilik, rövidcsőrű lúd, Kanadai lúd, Vörösnyakú lúd, Örvös lúd, Tundrai vetési lúd and Vetési lúd are often found during migration.
The sandbanks and lagoons are great spots for wading birds. Most common breeding birds are Piroslábú cankó, Parti lile, Csigaforgató, Aranylile, Bíbic, and Pajzsoscankó. During migration Füstös cankó, Gulipán, Havasi partfutó, Apró partfutó, Temminck-partfutó, Sarki partfutó, Sarlós partfutó, Nagy póling and Kis póling have been recorded.
