Description
Borreby Mose is a large area with bog and reedbeds. Around the bog are extensive meadows used for grazing. Despite attempts to drain and cultivate, today the site is protected under Natura 2000 and serves as a vital refuge for birds. The reedbeds host breeding Bölömbika, Barna rétihéja, Barkóscinege, Foltos nádiposzáta, cserregő nádiposzáta and occasionally rarities like Nádi tücsökmadár and Nádirigó. The wet meadows, shallow pools and muddy edges attract many waders and meadow-birds like Nagy goda, Pajzsoscankó, Bíbic, Piroslábú cankó, Csigaforgató, Parti lile, and Gulipán.
During migration thousands of geese roost in the area, joined by ducks like Nyílfarkú réce, Kanalas réce, Csörgo réce and Kontyos réce. Winter brings Kis bukó, Kerceréce, and Kékes rétihéja. A regular resident is Rétisas. Less common birds that visit Borreby Mose include Lócsér and vékonycsőrű víztaposó. Every year rarities turn up in the area, especially during migration. For example vándorpartfutó and Fekete gólya have been observed.
