A large lake that was created by sand extraction and attracts many birds.
The Koolhofput is a large lake of 10 hectares that was created by excavation of sand for the construction of the A18 motorway. The Koolhofput has become a stopping place for birds. Waterfowl feel at home there. As part of the land development, the Koolhofput was further provided with observation huts, a walking path and planting. Among the birds you can see here are Kékbegy, Foltos nádiposzáta, Nádi sármány, Berki poszáta, Kis vöcsök and many kinds of ducks, geese and other waterbirds.

Nederlands: Deze diepe waterput van 10 hectare is ontstaan door uitgraving van zand voor de aanleg van de A18 snelweg. Intussen is de Koolhofput een pleisterplaats voor vogels geworden. Watervogels voelen er zich thuis. In het kader van de landinrichting werd de Koolhofput verder voorzien van observatiehutten, een wandelpad en beplanting.
Freely accessible on the hiking trails from sunrise to sunset. There are two parking spaces, click on a P in the map to go to the parking of your choice. Also accessible via the Frontzate bicycle connection between Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide. The Frontzate is an old railway that now serves as a walking and cycling route.
