The diversity of natural features and easy accessibility of the Illmitzer Zicksee make it a highlight of any visit.
Traditional draw-wells and reed huts, cattle herds, families of geese, blossoming orchids in spring, and extensive salt efflorescences in summer are popular photo motifs.
From an ornithological point of view, the Illmitzer Zicksee (also known as the "Zicklacke") is certainly a “must-see”. At high water levels, a number of places offer good opportunities to observe birds at very close range. During the course of the year, about 15 duck species and 30 wader species use the lake or its shore zone as a resting area, and Kendermagos réce, Kanalas réce, and Tőkés réce breed here. In May and July/ August, this saline lake is the most reliable spot in the area to see Sárjáró , Temminck-partfutó , and Apró partfutó. It is also a good place to see: sárga billegető , Foltos nádiposzáta , Nádi tücsökmadár , Tövisszúró gébics , and Nádi sármány. Singing pearches for Búbospacsirta and Karvalyposzáta are almost “common knowledge”.
The parking area is located at Kirchentellinsfurter Platz. Driving around the soda pond is not allowed - walking or cycling are anyway the best ways to explore the area! Three wooden hides/towers (accessable with wheel chair) can be used for birdwatching around the Illmitzer Zicksee.
