Karavasta Lagoon is the largest lagoon in Albania and one of the largest adjoining the Mediterranean Sea, spanning an area of 42 km2.

Description

The Karavasta Lagoon is part of the Divjakë Karavasta National Park and is separated from the Adriatic Sea by a large strip of sand. The combination of lagoons, small sandy islands, coastal pine forest with sand dunes is attractive for many birds. 230 different species of birds have been recorded. The lagoon is renowned for Borzas gödény (6.4% of the Europe's population) and within the List of Ramsar wetlands of international importance. Other birds you can expect are Rózsás flamingó, Gólyatöcs, Széki lile, Nagy póling, Havasi partfutó, Szürke cankó, Székicsér, Kis csér, Kis kárókatona, Gyurgyalag and Sárgarigó.

Access

The lagoon is situated on the Adriatic coast, 40 km west of Lushnja city. From Tirana, you have to take the highway to Durres and then, from there, take the one to Fier. Then, after about 38 kilometers, follow the signs for Cerma and Sipërme, and then those for Divjaka. There is a visitor center, a bird watching tower and there is are trails to explore the area on foot. You can also book organized boat trips on the lake. Note that some trails can be closed in the breeding season and unfortunately this is not always well indicated at the start of a trail.
