An estuary which despite the nearby golf course and the beautiful beach attracting many people, has managed to preserve beautiful wildlife.
The Ythan Estuary is the tidal component of the Ythan River, emptying into the North Sea 19 kilometres north of Aberdeen. Besides the tidal channel there are interfaces to the upland dunes including mudflats, sand beaches and shingle flats. Possibility to see seals fishing from very close and to observe large groups of Gavka feeding in the watercourse. Also from very close you can see Arktička čigra, Veliki ronac and rarities sometimes, most notably a drake Kraljevska gavka since 2014 in the middle of the Gavka!
Easy access parking: 6BY, Beach Rd, Newburgh, Ellon, UK. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
Remember to check the tides. It is best to avoid the weekend.
