Over 170 bird species have been seen in this reserve, and 60 are known to have bred. Great place for waders and wildfowl.
Mere Sands Wood is a Lancashire Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve. Keep your eyes peeled for species like Zimovka, Poljski Vrabac, Veliki Djetlić and Kobac as they fly to and from their nests in the woodland. If you take a seat in one of the lakeside hides you may see Ćubasti Gnjurac performing their elaborate courtship ritual. Vodomar are present as well as wintering Bukavac. The lakes and reedbeds also support Kokošica, Močvarna Strnadica, Patka Batoglavica, Glavata Patka and more.There are multiple hides, and it's easy walking.
Decent car park (open 24 hours. £2 charge applies) and accesible trails (suitable for wheelchairs). Nearest train station Rufford (approx 1.5 miles away).
