Relandscaped gravel pits and water meadows adjoining River Trent, east of Nottingham.
At Gunthorpe Gravel Pits 120+ species of bird have been seen, including Bijeli ronac, Veliki ronac and Mali ronac in winter, when Vivak, Patka Žličarka and teal can be numerous on flooded fields. Spring brings Trstenjak cvrkutić, Trstenjak Rogožar, Pjegavi Cvrčić to breed, and Crna Čigra, Sivkasta Bjeloguza and Smeđoglavi Batić on migration. In summer, Sokol Lastavičar hunt swallows over the ponds.
Parking onsite, or adjacent to the pub, see map. Click on a P in the map to get directions to that point. The two circular walks shown are each about 3 km. The area is liable to flood in winter and may be slippery.
