Utklippan is a small island far out in the Baltic Sea, with one of Swedens more interesting banding stations.
First things first, it is complicated and quite expensive to get to Utklippan. Finally there ( its a one hour boat ride) it is tricky to find accomodations outside summer and tourist season (a hostel) . There are facilities at the banding station but its reserved for the personel. So, to be there in the most interesting time of year you more or less have to be a part of the crew at the bandingstation.
With that sorted Utklippan is an exiting island where anything can happen. The site is good to observe the migration of seafowl and, in good weather conditions, a lot of passerines rest there. Its location far out in the Baltic Sea implies that the island is the first or last stop for migrating birds, a magnet for rarities. Over the years exiting species as Žutogruda strnadica, Crnoglava Strnadica, Strnadica Cikavica, Limunasta Pastirica, Alpski popić, Sibirski popić, Desert Wheatear, Bjelogrli crvendać, Ružičasti čvorak, Bjelobrka Grmuša, Crnoglava Grmuša and Radde's Warbler have been banded.
The breeding birds of the islands are more scarce: Gavka, Mali tamnoleđi galeb, Crna njorka and a colony of Oštrokljuna njorka. Utklippan consist of two small islands, Södraskär and Norraskär. On the south is the banding station and the hostel, on the north the harbour. S of Södra skär is a big cliff, Degerhuvud, where the Oštrokljuna njorka can be seen.
There are three ways to get to Utklippan: going by your own boat, the tourist ferry (in the summer) or getting someone to bring you there. Make sure you arranged accommodation before you go and make sure you have food for some extra days ( you might get stuck in storms).
Some parts of the islands are restricted between 15th of April and 15 of July, please be aware of the signs.
