Description
Lake Sommen is quite deep and most of the lake is ice-free all-winter. During this period large amounts of Veliki ronac, Patka Batoglavica and Ćubasti Gnjurac winter in Sommen. Sometimes in the hundreds. Among these Krunata Patka, Crvenokljuni Labud, Žutokljuni Labud, Liska, and Burni Galeb can often be found. The lake is also home to quite a few rarer wintering birds like Crnogrli Plijenor, Mali ronac, Suri orao, Crna patka, Patka kulašica, Vodomar, Crvenogrli Plijenor and Riječni Galeb.
During the spring migration marine ducks can be found in the lake. At the same time Crvenogrli Plijenor, and Crnogrli Plijenor, arrive at the lake. Crnogrli Plijenor breeds in the lake while Crvenogrli Plijenor feeds in the lake and breeds in small neighbouring lakes. The rare Žutokljuni plijenor has been seen. Sommen archipelago hosts large colonies of Crvenokljuna Čigra, Burni Galeb, Riječni Galeb, Galeb Klaukavac, Siva Čaplja and Veliki Vranac. Among these some rare birds like Mali tamnoleđi galeb, and Arktička čigra can be seen.
The large decidous forests around sommen especially on Torpön host plenty of quite rare birds like: Mala muharica, Mali djetao, Kreja, and Mala Ušara. Around Sommen there is also old conifer forests around which support large populations of woodpeckers. Vijoglav, Zelena žuna, Crna žuna, Mali djetao, Troprsti djetlić (very rare), Veliki Djetlić and Planinski djetlić (extinct in the area) have all been recorded. Other otherwise rare forrest birds found here are: Lještarka Tetrijeb gluhan, Tetrijeb ruševac (Rocks mosse), and Kreja.
During the autumn birds can be seen migrating through the lake. Most common are the doves, finches, terns, and waders. At Rocks mosse Tetrijeb ruševac and Tetrijeb gluhan breed. At Visskvarn there are rapids where Vodenkos, and Gorska Pastirica can be seen.
