To the east of the Natural Park of the Marismas de Santoña, is the area of Montehano, characterized by its monastery and its quarry.
Montehano is one of the most interesting sites in the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park. In a relatively small space, the Montehano environment offers several key spaces for observing different types of birds. First of all, the quarry should be highlighted, which is home to Sivi Sokol and Crvenokrili litičar. In addition, the environment of the quarry, being a small forest, is full of all kinds of passerines, such as Crnokapa Grmuša, Šojka and Vatroglavi Kraljić.
On the other side of the road, towards the monastery, the little wood continues, leading us to some very good views of the wetland. From here, you can observe the characteristic birds of the marshes, such as Siva Čaplja, Crvenogrli Plijenor and Crvenonoga Prutka. If you walk in the opposite direction, going around Montehano, you reach another very interesting observation point, known as "El mirador de Montehano" (the Montehano viewpoint). From this last one you can see the Ría de Escalante, from a different point of view than that of the town itself. This area is also described on Birdingplaces.

Access is very simple, as there are several points where you can park your car. Click on a P in the map for directions. The route is very short and flat, the only difficulties being crossing the road from the monastery to the quarry and going along the jetty, which may not be accessible for people with reduced mobility.
