Description

La Laguna de la Nava is a great wetland for birding and a very important area for birds. It holds large flocks of Siva Guska, wintering waterfowl, steppe birds like Droplja, waders and ducks. Spring is the time of passage of migratory birds, such as Žličarka, Crvenonoga Prutka and other waders and plovers. The breeding season has species such as Čaplja Danguba, Eja Močvarica and Vlastelica among others. In summer despite of its water scarcity, the lagoon shelters several thousand Divlja Patka or hundreds of Bijela roda. In the autumn Ždral and a wide variety of waders and other passage migrants can be seen.

Access

The Laguna de la Nava is located 2 km southeast of the village of Fuentes de Nava and 20 km west of the city of Palencia. The area can be accessed by car. There are several parking lots and observatories. Indoor tour on weekends, when a guide explains what can be seen from the main observatory. Click on the P in the map to get directions.

Currently, the Nava Lagoon has an area of ​​307 hectares. Half of that area is managed imitating the natural cycle of wetlands, and the other half is destined to sheep farming. The Nava Lagoon is one of the most important wetlands in Spain: 259 species of birds have been spotted in this small enclave, which represents approximately 40% of all Spanish bird species.
