Beautiful laurel forest, with lots of wildlife and a good chance to see both special pigeons of Tenerife: Bolle's Pigeon and Laurel Pigeon.
The Monte del Agua forest near Erjos is an old humid laurel forest. The laurel forests on Tenerife are the last vestige of the vegetation that covered much of North Africa and Southern Europe in ancient times. Only a very few of these ancient forests remain, dotted about the Canary Islands. In these forests live unique pigeons like Bolle's Pigeon and Laurel Pigeon. The Monte del Agua forest is one of the best preserved laurel forests on Tenerife. A good point to see the pigeons are the dead bare trees around the red dot on the map. Sometimes they sit very exposed on the bare branches. Also a chance to see Kanarski kraljić, African Blue Tit and many other birds.
The laurel forest is easy to reach on foot from the village of Erjos. Parking is possible on the big central parking in Erjos. Click on the P in the map to get directions. Cross the road from the parking lot, go down the stairs at the church and follow the walking signs to 'Monte del Agua'. On the map we have indicated a short 4 km one way and back walking route. The first part of this route follows the Monte del Agua route, the second part a smaller path. It is possible to make longer circular walks in the laurel forests near Erjos. Higher up there is a separate parking place only for disabled. From that parking wheelchair owners can follow the paved Monte del Agua path and reach some viewpoints easily. The parking for disabled is marked with a star on the map (zoom in on the map to see the P on that location).
