Big lake with the largets concentration of ducks in Alentejo. But also many other birds. The surrounding areas are also good for birding.
Lagoa dos Patos is actually a reservoir. It has the highest concentrations of ducks in the Lower Alentejo. But it's not only ducks, you can also see many herons, waders and birds like Plamenac, Riđokrila Pješčarka, Bjelobrada Čigra, Debelokljuna Čigra, Blistavi Ibis, Vlastelica and Žličarka. The shore of the lagoon does not have much vegetation which makes it difficult to approach birds. So a telescope can be very useful. The surrounding green patches, olive groves and fields are home to birds like Crvenonoga jarebica, Sivi Ćuk, Bijela lunja, Pupavac, Pčelarica, Iberian Grey Shrike, Modra svraka, Crnoglava Grmuša, Kukmasta Ševa, Yellow-crowned Bishop, Common Waxbill and Velika Strnadica.
Lagoa dos Patos is located about 10 km south of Alvito and 20 km to the northwest of Beja. Access from Beja or Ferreira do Alentejo by EN 121 (IP8), turning north about 4 km east of Ferreira, following by Peroguarda and Alfundão and following the signs for Alvito. About 6 km north of Alfundão, a dirt road to the left leads to the Patos lagoon. You can reach the south bank of the lagoon by car. From there the area can be explored on foot.
