Description

The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Galeb klaukavac, Mali tamnoleđi galeb and Riječni Galeb. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Prugasti Pozviždač, Kameničak, Bijeli Žalar and Mala Prutka.

The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Crvenokljuna Čigra and Ružičasta čigra, but sometimes also Dugokljuna Čigra.

Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Veliki zovoj can be observed. Small numbers of Bulwer's Petrel can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Obična gregula and Plavonogi zovoj.

In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Delaverski galeb, Iceland Gull and, in 2011, a Žutoglavi gak.
