Little headland reserve along SH1 with Spotted Shag and Stewart Island Shag (Otago) roosts, a seal colony, and albatross on the ocean.
The Shag Point - Matakaea Scenic Reserve lies on headland with cliff-top viewing areas overlooking flat rock platforms used by Spotted Shag and Stewart Island Shag (Otago) as roost and breeding site as well as by New Zealand fur seals. Looking out over the ocean, there are good chances to see some albatross and other seabirds. The area also has a rich Māori and coalmining history.
Shag Point is about 9 km north of Palmerston and about 13 km south of Moeraki on SH1. As there is no public transport, driving/biking there, turn at the sign onto Shag Point Road, and follow until you reach the reserve carparks. Click on a P in the map for directions or coordinates. The viewing platforms with information signs are close to the carparks. Note that it can be very windy here and that dogs are not permitted in the reserve.
