Just below Utrecht, hidden in a bend of the river Lek, you can find a beautiful nature reserve: the floodplains at Everdingen. This unspoilt area is left to the whims of the broad river. Sometimes the water is high, sometimes low and sometimes even super high or super low. Because of the alternation between reed, river forest, shrubs, grassland, water features and muddy edges, you can see a lot of birds here. And the nice thing is: there is an unpaved hiking trail through the area. This walking path takes you through the river forest, past the grasslands and reed fields, the river, muddy edges and along the bushes.
Scan the edges of the reed beds. Bukavac is regularly seen here. In the reeds you can also find Kokošica, Močvarna Strnadica, Brkata Sjenica and Trstenjak cvrkutić. In the very early spring, at the end of February and March, dozens and sometimes hundreds of Crnorepa Muljača gather in the shallow water. The shallow water also exerts an enormous attraction for waders such as Kulik Sljepčić, Modronoga Sabljarka, Žalar Cirikavac, Crvenonoga Prutka and Oštrigar. You can also see ducks and geese in high numbers. Patka Žličarka, Utva, Kržulja, Veliki ronac, Sjevernomorska guska and Siva Guska are bound to be seen there. Sometimes also a few Mali labud. Occasionally Plamenac are observed.
In the forest you will of course see all kinds of forest birds like Veliki Djetlić, Zelena žuna, Dugorepa Sjenica and Zlatoglavi Kraljić. In the floodplains of Everdingen, Vodomar is also a forest bird. It breeds in the root system of fallen trees scattered here and there.

Nederlands: Net onder Utrecht, verscholen in een bocht van de rivier de Lek, ligt een prachtig natuurgebied: de uiterwaarden bij Everdingen. Dit ongerepte gebied wordt overgelaten aan de grillen van de brede rivier. Soms staat het water hoog, soms laag en soms zelfs super hoog of super laag. Door de afwisseling tussen riet, rivierbos, struiken, grasland, waterpartijen en modderige randen, zie je hier veel vogels. En het leuke is: er loopt een onverhard wandelpad doorheen. Dit wandelpad voert je door het rivierbos, langs de graslanden en rietvelden, de rivier, modderige randen en langs de struiken.
Scan de randen van de rietvelden. Bukavac is hier regelmatig te zien. In het riet vind je ook Kokošica, Močvarna Strnadica, Brkata Sjenica en Trstenjak cvrkutić. In het zeer vroege voorjaar, eind februari en maart, verzamelen tientallen en soms honderden Crnorepa Muljača zich in het ondiepe water. Het ondiepe water oefent ook een enorme aantrekkingskracht uit op steltlopers als Kulik Sljepčić, Modronoga Sabljarka, Žalar Cirikavac, Crvenonoga Prutka en Oštrigar. Je kunt ook in grote aantallen eenden en ganzen zien. Patka Žličarka, Utva, Kržulja, Veliki ronac, Sjevernomorska guska en Siva Guska zullen daar zeker te zien zijn. Soms ook een paar Mali labud. Af en toe worden Plamenac waargenomen.
In het bos zie je natuurlijk allerlei bosvogels zoals Veliki Djetlić, Zelena žuna, Dugorepa Sjenica en Zlatoglavi Kraljić. In de uiterwaarden van Everdingen is Vodomar ook een bosvogel. Hij broedt in het wortelstelsel van omgevallen bomen die hier en daar verspreid liggen.

Access
You can park in the beginning on the Lekdijk in near Fort Everdingen (see the P on the map). The best time for birdwatching in the floodplains near Everdingen is early morning. It is very quiet then, except for a few other early risers, you don't meet anyone. On weekends, especially Sundays, it can be quite busy after ten with walkers and dog owners. The circular walking trail is about 8 km.

Nederlands: Je kunt parkeren op de Lekdijk bij Fort Everdingen (Klik op de P in de kaart voor een routebeschrijving). De beste tijd om vogels te kijken in de uiterwaarden bij Everdingen is 's ochtends vroeg. Het is dan erg rustig, behalve een paar andere vroege vogels, kom je niemand tegen. In het weekend, vooral op zondag, kan het na tien uur behoorlijk druk zijn met wandelaars en hondenbezitters. Als je de hele wandelroute loopt is dat ongeveer 8 km.
