Description

Khongoryn Els, also known as the Singing Sands, is one of Mongolia’s natural wonders with massive golden sand dunes that rise dramatically from the Gobi Desert floor. The dunes stretch over 180 km long, up to 12 km wide, and can reach heights of 300 meters. A wonderful place where sanddunes meet marshes, which is a very special combination. Birds observed include: Black Kite, Saxaul Sparrow, Pallas's Sandgrouse, Eurasian Curlew, Common Snipe, Common Redshank, Asian Short-toed Lark, Northern Lapwing, Great Grey Shrike, Desert Wheatear, Demoiselle Crane and Ruddy Shelduck.

Access

Khongoryn Els is situated in Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park, in Umnugovi Province, southern Mongolia. From Ulaanbaatar via Bulgan to Khongor, 4x4 required. On site you have to explore the area on foot, to the saxaul sparrows by car.
