Description

Forte Siacci is the biggest Umbertine Fort of the Messina Strait. It's a good lookout point to see the migration of birds that follow the Strait of Messina, which is one one of the most important European migration flyways for both raptors and storks as well as many other species. Over the years more than 300 bird species have been recorded in the area and an incredible 40 species of raptors. 20-30 thousand raptors are counted every spring from March until the end of May, the commonest species are Škanjac osaš, Eja Močvarica, Crna lunja, Eja Livadarka, Stepska Eja, Sokol Lastavičar, moreover Bijela roda, Crna Roda and Pčelarica also migrate at the site. In autumn the migration is less massive, but still well worth a visit. Also see the birdlist below.
