Description

The Atlantic Pond is a unique setting in Cork City, as the freshwater lake is surrounded by woodland and is situated next to Cork Harbour, meaning coastal, freshwater and woodland species can all be seen here.

The lake is most well known for its Siva Čaplja colony on the island which can be easily viewed from the path. Mala Bijela Čaplja also breed on the island, but in smaller numbers. March and April are the best months to visit to see the most amount of activity and before the vegetation obscures the majority of the island. Another species that can be easily seen here is Mali Gnjurac, with a few pairs nesting on the lake.

Mala Prutka, Vodomar and Gorska Pastirica can be seen at the lake or nearby on the walls of the marina. The woodland provides an opportunity to see most woodland species and is probably the best place in the city to see Šojka.

In winter, rare gulls are occasionally observed here, with records of Mali Galeb and Delaverski galeb in previous winters.
