Lake Almyros is one of the most important wetlands of western Crete. In the lake you can find many aquatic birds. The lake is not only worth a visit for waterfowl. In Georgioupoulis I found the largest Lastavica roost I have seen so far! Among the other birds you can encounter are Krivokljuna Prutka, Prutka Migavica, Šljuka Kokošica, Mala Prutka, Crnokrila Prutka, Vodomar, Bijela Čiopa, Mala Bijela Čaplja, Galeb klaukavac, Češljugar, Talijanski vrabac and Svilorepa.

You can reach the lake from the town when following the road "Palea EO Chanion Rethimnou". The Lastavica roost is at the opposite position of the town.
