Description

The village of Valwig is located in the Moselle Valley, near the famous tourist town of Cochem. The Apolloweg starts along the road between Valwig and Valwigerberg above the valley. This is a walking route that shows the visitor which biotopes are present in the Moselle valley and also provides information about the plants and animals that occur there. The majority of the journey takes the hiker through vineyards, but there are also beautiful winter oak forests and rocky parts. The special bird of this area is Strnadica Cikavica. This species is normally found in southern Europe, but can also be found in the warm Moselle Valley. They are often singing on a support pole of a vine or at the bottom of a tree. They make their nest on rocky spots where the young are exposed to high temperatures and bright sunshine.

Also special is the occurrence of various species of butterflies, with the absolute highlight being the Moselle Apollo (Parnassius apollo ssp. Vinegensis).
