Description
The area around the lakes „Teufelsee“ and „Pfaffensee“ was designated as a nature reserve in 1998. Since then, smaller ponds called “Grubenteiche” between the two lakes have been created to provide spawning grounds for amphibians and dragonflies. Surrounded by five kilometers of hedges, both lakes not only offer suitable habitats for many water birds and waders, but also for songbirds that build their nests in hedges and bushes. Due to the proximity to other wetlands and lakes, such as "Bingenheimer Ried" or "Unterer Knappensee" a lively exchange of bird life is possible. The Pfaffensee, for example, is home to the only Hessian breeding population of Riđogrli Gnjurac. Both lakes are also of great importance during migration or as a wintering area. Among the birds you can see here are Žuta Pastirica, Eja Močvarica, Krivokljuna Prutka, Patka Pupčanica, Slavuj and many more, see the extendend birdlist below.
