A former gravel mining area in the Werra valley. The lakes are a magnet for water birds.
After gravel mining ended in Freudenthal, the lakes became an important refuge for water birds. The area, which is now protected, offers suitable resting opportunities for many migratory birds and breeding opportunities for water-bound species in particular. The area is characterized by large groups of Veliki Vranac, Liska and Glavata Patka, but rarities such as Mali Vranac, Velika čigra and Žutokljuni Labud have also been observed.
Freudenthal is located on a major road and can only be reached by car. Parking options are limited and are best possible in the marked areas in the east. Click on a P in the map for directions.
