The nature reserve of Scamandre comprises around 146 ha of mainly water, marshes and reed lands. It is one of the most important bird areas in the Camargue.
You start at the information center (free admission, Tuesday / Saturday 9 AM - 6 PM). Just behind the visitor center, a Bijela roda breeds on a nesting pole. And Slavuj sing to you from the bushes. Raised wooden walkways lead you through marshes and wet forests with large heron colonies. A little further you will find larger parts with open water and a vast reed field with Europska velika sultanka. There are several good bird hides and viewing screens. A bird hide hut gives you a beautiful view of the vast lake.
You can park at the visitor center on Route des Iscles Gallician, 30600 Vauvert. Click on the P in the map to get directions. In the visitor center you can get a free map of the area. The people who work there are very helpful and show you places on the map where you can find specific bird species. There are 2 routes on the map. A red one of 4 km that makes a circle around the area. An orange route (2 km round trip) that guides you along the best viewpoints.
