Description
Luitemaa Nature Reserve is a wetland complex on the south-western coast of Estonia that consists of diverse coastal and inland habitats including shallow sea, capes and islands, coastal meadows and reed-beds. The coastal meadows near Võiste have shallow waters that attract large amounts of dabbling ducks (Patka Kreketaljka, Divlja Patka, Patka Pupčanica, Zviždara, Kržulja and so on), Utva and swans. The wide coastal meadows and lagoons are favored by geese. Most common are Siva Guska and Sjevernomorska guska. Rarer gooses like Lisasta Guska, Crvenonoga guska, Kanadska guska, Crvenovrata guska, Grivasta guska, Tundra guska and Guska Glogovnjača are often found during migration.
The sandbanks and lagoons are great spots for wading birds. Most common breeding birds are Crvenonoga Prutka, Kulik Blatarić, Oštrigar, Troprsti Zlatar, Vivak, and Pršljivac. During migration Crna Prutka, Modronoga Sabljarka, Žalar Cirikavac, Mali Žalar, Sijedi Žalar, Rđasti Žalar, Krivokljuni Žalar, Veliki Pozviždač and Prugasti Pozviždač have been recorded.
