Description
Borreby Mose is a large area with bog and reedbeds. Around the bog are extensive meadows used for grazing. Despite attempts to drain and cultivate, today the site is protected under Natura 2000 and serves as a vital refuge for birds. The reedbeds host breeding Bukavac, Eja Močvarica, Brkata Sjenica, Trstenjak Rogožar, Trstenjak cvrkutić and occasionally rarities like Veliki Cvrčić and Veliki Trstenjak. The wet meadows, shallow pools and muddy edges attract many waders and meadow-birds like Crnorepa Muljača, Pršljivac, Vivak, Crvenonoga Prutka, Oštrigar, Kulik Blatarić, and Modronoga Sabljarka.
During migration thousands of geese roost in the area, joined by ducks like Patka Lastarka, Patka Žličarka, Kržulja and Krunata Patka. Winter brings Bijeli ronac, Patka Batoglavica, and Eja Strnjarica. A regular resident is Štekavac. Less common birds that visit Borreby Mose include Velika čigra and Tankokljuna liskonoga. Every year rarities turn up in the area, especially during migration. For example Pectoral Sandpiper and Crna Roda have been observed.
