Swampy lakes in Zagreb city. One of the best birding locations in the city itself.
The Savica Lakes are a wetland of twelve little lakes in Zagreb City. Former backwaters of the Sava River, surrounded by lush vegetation and walking paths. There is an ornithological station, regularly hosting workshops on bird watching and preservation. The Savica Lakes are a quiet and peaceful place, without any commercial facilities. Around the swampy lakes, along the Sava river and trees and bushes plenty of birds can be seen. A birding group counted 33 species in a 3-hour run.
The Savica Lakes are easily accessible by car. There is a dedicated car park near a heating plant in the area, but even if it's taken, you can park by the side of the road nearby.
You can also get there by public transport. It's a 25 minute walk (2 km) from the Borovje tram station or 15 minutes (1 km) from Farkašička bus stop. After that, you can walk. Or cycle, if you wish.
