Masis Fish Ponds

Ararat province  >  Armenia

Fish farming ponds in the valley of the Metsamor River.

Description

The sturgeon farm ponds, the adjacent abandoned ponds, and swampy pits, as well as the valley of the Metsamor River – a right tributary of the Agstev River – form an interesting wetland area. A wide variety of birds can be observed here, especially during the spring migration. However, if you visit Armenia in winter, there will also be quite a few birds around Masis.

The abundance of birds, proximity to Yerevan (less than an hour's drive from the city center), and the area being open for visits (you can move between the ponds without any restrictions) make this a popular spot among birdwatchers.

Access

The easiest way to reach the Masis Fish Ponds from Yerevan is by taxi or car. If you take a taxi, agree with the driver in advance and rent the taxi for the entire route. It will be difficult to call a taxi back, and there are many aggressive dogs around the spot, making it unsafe to walk. I do not recommend straying far from the car – again, because of the aggressive dogs.
