Description

TNC White Kitchen Preserve is a small patch of trees and brush bordering a small lake that is adjacent to large costal marshes, forest and the Pearl River. The close proximity to other habititats provides a lot of oportunity for good birding in one area.

The immediate location has produced many sightings but it also provides close access to other habitats including Fritchie Marsh with chances for shorebirds, gulls and cormorants. It is an excellent location for Limpkin. Snowy Egret, Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, and Anhinga are present all year with Green Heron and Tricolored Heron likely spring through fall.

Migration brings possible sightings of warblers such as Northern Waterthrush, Northern Parula and Yellow Warbler. Yellow-rumped Warbler, Common Yellowthroat and Orange-crowned Warbler are present in winter.

Accès

TNC White Kitchen Preserve is located at the junction of US 190 and US 90/Chef Menteur Highway near Slidell, Louisiana. It is not well-marked but easily identifiable. Access is by car with no public transportation available. There is a large unmarked parking area between the drive through loop and the highway. Press P on the map for directions.

The immediate site is birded by foot. There is a boardwalk that extends from the tree line to the edge of the lake. However has not been maintained and should be used with extreme care if at all. It is best to observe the lake from the boat launch. Walking around the oaks and trees next in the parking lot can be productive for passerines. The wet grassy area between the parking area and the highway has produced Wilson's Snipe.

Visits range from thirty minutes to two hours in the area. Patience is rewarded.
