Plumb Beach is a 150-acre saltwater beach and wetland part of the Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn, New York.
The area is a small beach with dune, mudflat, and marsh habitat which provides an ideal area for Seaside Sparrow, Red Knot, and Clapper Rail. The area is relatively nice, with trails through the grass and plenty of beach you can walk on. During low tide, a large section of mudflat is revealed, bringing in lots of shorebirds from the bay. There is a bathroom, although it has been closed for at least a few years. In place, there are some porta-potties at the front of the reserve.
The area is located at the end of Brooklyn near the neighborhood of Gerritsen Beach. To travel here by public transportation, take the (Q) or (B) trains to Sheepshead Bay, then transfer to the B4 bus, and get off at Shore Parkway and Brigham Street. If you are traveling by car, there is parking off the Belt Parkway, near the official entrance. Press P on the map for directions.
Watch out for ticks! During the summer, the dunes and forest are a hotspot for American Dog Ticks. While not as bad as the Deer Ticks that spread Lyme Disease, many ticks have the possibility to spread disease.
